The New York Jets have announced that Jim DeSarno of Westfield High School in Westfield, N.J., has been named this week's recipient of the New York Jets High School Coach of the Week Award. For his efforts, he will receive $1,000 to benefit the school's football program and will be presented with a certificate from the Jets.
This award, in its 14th year, is given to a coach in the tristate area who serves the best interests of the game through the teaching of sound football fundamentals, the motivation of young players to achieve, and the promotion of youth football by way of dedication to their community, their school and their student-athletes.
DeSarno is in his fourth season as head coach of the Blue Devils. He has compiled a 26-13 record in leading Westfield to the playoffs from 2007-09. The Pompton Lakes High School alumnus made all-county and all-league teams as a center, then became an all-conference second-team center at Montclair State University. DeSarno is also a physical education teacher at Westfield.
On Friday, the Blue Devils defeated the previously unbeaten Farmers of Union High School, 35-14, for their fifth straight victory to improve to 6-2 as they head into the state section playoffs against the Columbia Cougars on Saturday at Westfield starting at 1 p.m.
