The New York Jets announced today that Joe Piccininni of Newfield High School in Selden, N.Y., has been named this week's recipient of the New York Jets High School Coach of the Week Award. For his efforts, he will receive $1,000 to benefit the school's football program and he will be presented with a certificate from the Jets.
In its 12th year, the award is given to a coach in the tristate area who serves the best interests of the game through the teaching of sound football fundamentals, the motivation of young players to achieve, and the promotion of youth football by way of dedication to their community, their school and their student-athletes.
Piccininni is in his third season as head coach of the Wolverines. A 1978 alumnus of Bellport High School, he was a Newsday and Daily News first-team selection as a defensive lineman in 1977. Piccininni matriculated to Carson-Newman College and transferred to Oklahoma Panhandle State University, from where he graduated with a degree in health and physical education. He is in his eighth year as a physical education teacher at Newfield High.
On Friday night the Wolverines defeated the Riverhead Blue Waves, 15–7. They are 3-0 and off to their best start since 1965. Newfield will face its crosstown rivals, the Centereach Cougars, on homecoming Saturday, Oct. 6, at 2 p.m.
