The New York Jets have announced that safety Eric Smith has been activated from the Reserve/Suspended list, offensive lineman Will Montgomery has been waived and linebacker Brandon Renkart has been released from the practice squad. The announcements were made by Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum.
Smith (6'1", 209), in his third NFL season, has played in four games (starting three) this season and recorded 16 total tackles (11 solo), one interception for 6 yards, two passes defensed and three special teams tackles.
Montgomery (6'2", 312) was originally signed Sept. 19, 2007, as a free agent and appeared in seven games for the Jets last season. He was active for the first three games of 2008 but did not play before he was waived Sept. 25, then was re-signed Sept. 29. Montgomery was drafted by Carolina in the seventh round (234th overall) of the 2006 NFL Draft.
Renkart (6'2", 236) was originally signed July 29 as a free agent, waived Aug. 30, signed to the practice squad on Sept. 1, released from the practice squad Sept. 15, and re-signed to the practice squad Sept. 30.
