The New York Jets announced today that Rob Blount of Oceanside High School in Oceanside, N.Y., has been named this week's recipient of the New York Jets High School Coach of the Week Award. For his efforts, Blount will receive $1,000 to benefit the school's football program, and he will be presented with a certificate from the Jets.
The award, in its 15th year, is given to a coach in the tristate area who serves the best interests of the game through the teaching of sound football fundamentals, the motivation of young players to achieve, and the promotion of youth football by way of dedication to the community, the school and the student-athletes.
Blount is in his second season as the head coach of the Sailors. He previously served as the offensive coordinator at his alma mater, Lawrence High School, where he was an all-county quarterback. During his stint there, the team won Nassau County championships in 2006 and '07, along with winning the Long Island Class II championship in '06. Blount teaches social studies at Oceanside in addition to his coaching duties.
On Saturday night, Oceanside defeated the East Meadow Jets, 48-7, to improve to 4-0 on the season. This is the Sailors' best start since 1977, the last time they won a championship. They will go on the road to face the Dalers of Farmingdale High School on Saturday, Oct. 9.
