
The Jets have signed defensive tackle Byron Cowart.
Cowart (6-3, 300) played 15 games and started 7 last season for the Bears where he overlapped with Jets defensive line coach Eric Washington. He totaled 14 tackles, 2.5 sacks ad 4 QB hits. Cowart, who grew up roughly 15 miles outside Tampa in Seffner, FL, spent the 2023 season on the Dolphins' practice squad after an offseason stint with the Chiefs and a training camp stint with the Texans.
Cowart rejoins the AFC East — he was drafted by the Patriots in the fifth round in 2019. He began his college career at Auburn and played three seasons for the Tigers before one year at Maryland.
He's started 21 of the 51 games he's played in and has 67 tackles, 10 tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks and 7 QB hits in his NFL career.
