Jets head coach Robert Saleh told reporters after Thursday's joint practice with the Commanders that he felt the inclement weather limited the team's passing offense. That did not apply to third-year WR Garrett Wilson.

"Garrett looked awesome," Saleh said. "But there are some simple things that we can clean up."

Wilson started the day with a tip-toe-touchdown grab on a fade with Commanders CB Emmanuel Forbes in coverage. Wilson was able to tap both feet in bounds on a ball from Tyrod Taylor, who took reps with the starters in place of Aaron Rodgers. Saleh decided to keep Rodgers on the sideline because of the inclement weather.

Taylor and Wilson then connected on a pair of chunk plays in the next team period. The veteran quarterback launched a ball down the sideline that Wilson brought in with Forbes a step behind. Four plays later, Wilson found a soft spot in the zone and made a couple defenders miss before he gained extra yards.

"I love that kid," Taylor said. "One of my good friends. … It's been a pleasure working alongside of him. He's a fierce competitor. His passion for the game, I haven't seen many people like that."

Taylor's practice ended by leading the starting offense down the field in an end-of-game situation. Down by 20-19, the drive started on the Jets' 35-yard line with 1:19 remaining in regulation and no timeouts.

Taylor fired a pair of incompletions to WR Allen Lazard before he connected with Tyler Conklin over the middle for a big gain. Lazard then converted on fourth down before Wilson put the Jets near field-goal range. The offense, however, failed to convert on fourth down and the drive stalled.

"Thankful for the opportunity and I was able to make some plays with a bunch of guys that I hadn't really had a bunch of reps with," Taylor said. He added: "It's easy to come out a joint practice two and a half weeks into camp raining and to complain and nobody did that. You didn't hear one complaint the whole day. Guys were excited guys, cheering each other on.

"We lifted one another up. We competed at a high level and the leaders stepped up in lead in a big way on the field as far as making plays and vocally."

Defense Thrives in the Rain
Seven-on-seven is difficult to evaluate considering there's no pass rush, but the Jets defense made life difficult for the Commanders' quarterbacks in team periods.

To close out practice, the Jets' first-team defense matched up with rookie QB Jayden Daniels, drafted No. 2 overall out of LSU, and the Commanders first-team offense in a two-minute end-of-game situation. LB C.J. Mosley's unit forced four-straight incompletions (aided by a holding call that nullified a Zach Ertz completion) capped by All-Pro CB Sauce Gardner's leaping pass defense on fourth down.

"Once we got to playing 11-on-11 we started to show our show style," Mosley said. "It's fun to finally go against somebody else even if it is under controlled conditions but we got to go out there and play and show our style. So, it was fun today."

He added: "Coach Brick [DC Jeff Ulbrich] always says you want to start off fast and start good, but it isn't always how you start, it's how you finish. … Anytime we get put out on the field during a two minute we want to come up with a victory."

Mosley set the tone in the final period, breaking up a short pass from Daniels to Ertz on first down. He also disrupted a ball from Daniels to the veteran tight end on third-and-long earlier in practice where the 2023 Heisman Trophy winner was forced out to his left by second-year pass rusher Will McDonald IV.

"There's only so much you can see in one practice, but [Daniels] has a great arm and good confidence," Mosley said. "I got one PBU off him so that's good, a little Roll Tide-LSU combination. He's going to have a great career. Hopefully he stays healthy and they keep building around him."
