After trailing 13-0 in the first half, the Jets took an 8-point lead in the fourth quarter over the Colts. But the Green & White could not hang on and lost to Indianapolis, 28-27, at MetLife Stadium on Sunday.
The Jets dropped to 3-8 while the Colts improved to 5-6 and snapped a three-game losing streak. Breece Hall scored 2 TDs in defeat, amassing 121 total yards on 23 touches. Aaron Rodgers threw 2 TD passes but was held to 184 yards on 22 completions.
"Angry, frustrated," intermi HC Jeff Ulbrich said of the team's mindset. "Not in a good place from that standpoint. Guys are working their butts off and there's an element to something's missing. Whether it be in the preparation, in the gameplanning, the execution or if it's a little bit of all those things. It's a good time for a bye not necessarily to take a break but to reassess where we're at and what we do best, what we're not doing well and need to get fixed and take a hard look at ourselves."
Colts' second-year QB Anthony Richardson, making his first start since being benched in Week 9, responded to his two-game benching with 270 yards through the air and 2 rush TDs.
Richardson's second TD, a 4-yard keeper, put the Colts up, 28-27, (2-point conversion failed) with 51 seconds remaining. Indianapolis got into striking distance following a 39-yard completion down the visiting sideline to WR Alec Pierce, who entered Sunday's contest leading the NFL with 22.4 yards per catch.
"We were in palms coverage," Gardner said. "We're going to watch the tape [Monday] and we're going to talk about it more, but that's a play that shouldn't happen.
"We knew that they needed a touchdown, obviously. We need to be better."
In a last-ditch effort on the game's final drive, Rodgers tried to get the ball to TE Tyler Conklin as he was being tackled, but the ball went behind the line of scrimmage and was ruled a lateral. Without any timeouts left, the Green & White hustled to the line of scrimmage for a second-and-23 on their 17-yard line. After a completion to Hall, Rodgers was sacked on third down to end the game.
"Not a very good play," Rodgers said of the fumble. "I was getting rushed. I knew Conk was out there somewhere. I was trying to throw it forward. I don't know if I got hit or if it just didn't come off right. I was trying to throw an incompletion. Pretty bad play."
Earlier in the fourth quarter, tight end Kenny Yeboah gave the Jets an 8-point on an 11-yard catch-and-run with what was his first career NFL touchdown. Richardson responded with an 8-play, 70-yard scoring drive, capped by a 10-yard scoring strike to WR Josh Downs, but the Colts failed 2-point conversion attempt preserved the Jets' 24-22 lead.
Rodgers answered with what looked to be a game-closing drive that included a 17-yard first-down conversion to Xavier Gipson on third-and-14 that put the Jets on their own 43-yard line. The offense then overcame the team's first penalty of the game, a holding infraction on rookie Olu Fashanu, and gained a first down after being set up with second-and-14 with completions to Malachi Corley (10 yards) and Jeremy Ruckert (6 yards).
K Anders Carlson, called up from the practice squad Saturday, gave the Jets a 27-22 lead with a 35-yard field goal with 2:41 remaining.

The Jets' offense struggled in the first half as it totaled just 9 yards on the opening 9 plays. The Colts, on the other hand, scored on two of their first three possessions and grabbed a 10-0 lead. After K Matt Gay hit a 41-yard field goal in the first quarter, Richardson found the end zone on a 2-yard run early in the second stanza to push the lead to double digits.
Hall scored for the Green & White before halftime to make it a one-score game, 13-7, when Rodgers connected with the running back over the middle on a 29-yard catch-and-run. Hall did most of the work (28 yards after the catch), registering his fifth touchdown of the year and first scoring grab since Week 2 in Tennessee.
Gay's third field goal – a 56-yard boot – gave the visitors a 16-14 lead that held up until new kicker Carlson had an answer with a career-long 58-yard boot. The Jets took advantage of Colts WR Ashton Dulin's fair-catch-interference penalty, as the Green & White started its drive at the Indianapolis 38. Despite moving back 2 yards on the possession, Carlson made it a 17-16 contest with inches to spare.
Jamien Sherwood's strip-sack of Richardson in plus-territory got the Jets started in the second half. Following Javon Kinlaw's recovery, Hall carried for 7 yards and then finished the scoring possession with a 18-yard TD run. The Jets had their first lead, 14-13, just 47 seconds into the third quarter.
Still without a first down in the first half, the Jets elected to go for it on a fourth-and-1 from their own 39. But Conklin was stuffed after taking a direct snap and the Colts converted with points, tacking on Gay's 47-yarder with 6:08 remaining in the second quarter.
The Jets head into their bye week with a 3-8 record.
