Jets-Steelers Game Recap | Early Lead Evaporates in 37-15 Loss

Aaron Rodgers Passes for 276 Yards; His 2 INTs Lead to 14 Pittsburgh Points

Game Recap-wk-7-2024

The Jets and Aaron Rodgers got the start they wanted in Pittsburgh and then rookie CB Beanie Bishop got in the way. Bishop's two interceptions led to a pair of touchdowns as Pittsburgh scored the game's final 31 points in a 37-15 runaway. The Jets dropped to 2-5 while the Steelers moved to 5-2 and a half-game ahead of the Baltimore Ravens in the AFC North.

"Tonight was not good enough," interim HC Jeff Ulbrich said. "That starts with me and the coaching staff, and it goes down to every single player on this team. We can all get more and we will get more. We have what we need. That is not who we are. Extremely disappointed."

The Green & White raced to a 15-6 lead as they got red zone touchdowns from Breece Hall and Tyler Conklin while the Steelers settled for a pair of Chris Boswell field goals in plus territory.

Spreading the ball around, Aaron Rodgers' first 13 completions went to six different targets. Hall paid dividends as a receiver, hauling in 4 of those 13 passes for 93 yards, including a 57-yard catch-and-run that set up Rodgers' 1-yard score to Conklin. Minkah Fitzpatrick's blocked extra point was nullified due to a leverage infraction, interim HC Jeff Ulbrich elected for a 2-point attempt and Rodgers followed with a conversion to Garrett Wilson.

With a solid 15-6 lead intact, the Jets looked for more at the end of the second quarter. But Rodgers was intercepted by Bishop, who made a brilliant one-handed grab near midfield, and the Steelers took advantage. After George Pickens drew a 29-yard pass interference call on Sauce Gardner, Russell Wilson hit Pickens on a 11-yard scoring fade over Brandin Echols. Instead of widening their advantage, the Jets were ahead,15-13, at intermission.

"It was bad throw by me," Rodgers said. "I should have just dumped that underneath. That play, for whatever reason, changed the entire momentum of the game. ... We got to run the ball better and I have got to play better."

Despite the Steelers' 4-2 start with Justin Fields at QB, HC Mike Tomlin opted to give the ball to R. Wilson for his first Steelers start. Wilson was off early, hitting on just 2 of his first 8 passes and Will McDonald VI got to him in the second quarter for his team-leading eighth sack. But Pittsburgh scored on its final five drives with 4 TDs and a FG.

The Jets grabbed a first quarter lead as Hall's 13-yard run past the left pylon gave the visitors a 7-3 advantage with 2:27 remaining. Rodgers, who finished 24 of 39 for 276 yards with 1 TD and 2 INT, completed all 6 of his passes on the march for 58 yards including a 9-yard connection to Davante Adams, marking their first connection since 2021. Hall covered 31 yards on their scoring possession catching a pair of balls out of the backfield and Wilson got the Jets into the red zone on 12-yard catch-and-run.

Already down three defensive backfield starters in CB D.J. Reed (groin), nickel back Michael Carter II (back) and safety Chuck Clark (IR, ankle), the Jets lost safety Tony Adams to a hamstring injury. Gardner, who was out of the game for Pickens' second quarter TD, started the game with Brandin Echols at CB, Isaiah Oliver and Jalen Mills at safety. Ashtyn Davis replaced T. Adams (hamstring) in the second stanza only to go out with a head injury in the second half.

Things got away from the Jets in the second half. R. Wilson's 37- and 21-yard completions to Pickens and TE Pat Freiermuth set up a Boswell chip shot from 21 yards out as the Steelers hopped ahead at 16-15.

"Going to this game momentum, we knew, was going to be a big part of it," Ulbrich said. "Especially the environment we're playing in. And in these games, you can't give up those big plays because it's just this huge shift in momentum."

Then Rodgers threw a perfect ball to Garrett Wilson, but it snuck up on the third-year wideout and bounced off his chest into the waiting hands of Bishop. His 41-yard return to the NYJ 1-yard line set up R. Wilson's 1-yard sneak and it was a 23-15 game. On the ensuing drive, Rodgers got the Jets to Steelers 17 but points proved elusive as Greg Zeurlein's 35-yard field goal attempt was blocked. Thirteen plays later, R. Wilson hit Van Jefferson, son of Jets WR coach Shawn Jefferson, for a 4-yard TD and Pittsburgh suddenly had doubled up the Jets, 30-15. Najee Harris, who rushed for 102 yards on 21 carries, ending the scoring with a 10-yard score with 26 seconds left.

"We just weren't taking our layups," Hall said. "I feel like we were just making it hard for ourselves and that was really frustrating. We were still able to move the ball up and down the field but we just weren't able to score points. It sucks when we get to the red zone and just aren't able to convert how we need too. We have just got to be better there."
