The Jets have placed edge rusher Jermaine Johnson on injured reserve and signed DL Jalyn Holmes from the practice squad to the active roster. The team also called up LB Marcelino McCrary-Ball for Thursday's game against the Patriots.
Johnson (6-5, 254) ruptured his Achilles tendon near the end of the third quarter in the Jets' 24-17 win at Tennessee Sunday. Johnson, the No. 26 overall pick in 2022, was named to the Pro Bowl last season when he totaled 7.5 sacks, 55 tackles, 11 tackles for loss, 16 QB hits and an interception that he returned for a touchdown. Johnson, a Florida State product, lined up in 14 games as a rookie and played 312 defensive snaps while totaling 2.5 sacks.
Holmes (6-5, 283), who was elevated in Week 1 and Week 2, totaled 4 tackles on 31 snaps. Originally a Vikings' draft pick out of Ohio State in 2018, Holmes played 5 games for the Green & White last season and recorded 5 tackles and a QB hit before he re-signed with the team in March. Prior to the Jets, Holmes spent three seasons with Minnesota (2018-20) and accounted for a sack, 4 tackles for loss and 5 QB hits. He also had one-year stints with the Saints (2021) and Bears (2022).
McCrary-Ball (6-0, 214) signed with the Jets practice squad in August after spending training camp and a majority of the 2023 with the Green & White. The former Indiana Hoosier signed with Jets P-squad last August before being added to the active roster in January. He appeared in two games for the Green & White and took 19 special teams snaps. McCrary-Ball began his career with the 49ers, signing as an undrafted free agent out of Indiana in 2022. He spent two training camps with San Francisco before joining the Jets midway through the '23 season.
